How to Lower a Jeep XJ Transfer Case

A ratchet and socket set is required to lower your transfer case.

After installing a lift kit on your Jeep XJ, the angle of the drive-shaft changes. This can cause the drive-shaft to vibrate during acceleration and deceleration because of the steep angle of the drive shaft. The angle will cause the u-joints to prematurely fail. To eliminate these problems, install a transfer case drop kit. The kit can be purchased online or your local auto parts store can order one for you. Installation can be completed in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

• Hydraulic jack
• Ratchet
• Socket set

Instructions

1. Crawl under the center of your vehicle and locate the transfer case. The drive shafts are connected to the transfer case.

2. Place a jack under the center of the cross-member under the transfer case. Lift the jack so that it is touching the cross-member to support the weight when the bolts are removed.

3. Remove the bolts that secure the cross-member to the frame rails with a ratchet and socket. There are two bolts on each side of the cross-member.

4. Lower the jack enough to slide the spacers between the frame rails of the vehicle and the transfer case cross-member.

5. Install the bolts that came with the kit through the cross-member, into the spacers and thread them into the frame rails. Tighten them using a ratchet and socket.

6. Lower the jack and pull it away from the vehicle.
