How to Lower a Jeep XJ Transfer Case

How to Lower a Jeep XJ Transfer Case thumbnail
A ratchet and socket set is required to lower your transfer case.

After installing a lift kit on your Jeep XJ, the angle of the drive-shaft changes. This can cause the drive-shaft to vibrate during acceleration and deceleration because of the steep angle of the drive shaft. The angle will cause the u-joints to prematurely fail. To eliminate these problems, install a transfer case drop kit. The kit can be purchased online or your local auto parts store can order one for you. Installation can be completed in about an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Crawl under the center of your vehicle and locate the transfer case. The drive shafts are connected to the transfer case.

    • 2

Place a jack under the center of the cross-member under the transfer case. Lift the jack so that it is touching the cross-member to support the weight when the bolts are removed.

    • 3

Remove the bolts that secure the cross-member to the frame rails with a ratchet and socket. There are two bolts on each side of the cross-member.

    • 4

Lower the jack enough to slide the spacers between the frame rails of the vehicle and the transfer case cross-member.

    • 5

Install the bolts that came with the kit through the cross-member, into the spacers and thread them into the frame rails. Tighten them using a ratchet and socket.

    • 6

Lower the jack and pull it away from the vehicle.
