When relocating, you may wish to know important statistics about potential addresses such as crime rates, quality of school and real estate costs. There are many ways to investigate a new neighborhood for free such as using a review site like Yelp or looking up articles on the neighborhood. You can find general crime information for free but detailed, specific information about crimes in an area often requires purchasing a report.

Instructions

  1. Neighborhood Scout

      Navigate to Neighborhoodscout.com.

      Press on the "Learn" tab on the top left corner of the window. Enter your address in the "Address" tab and your zip code in the "ZIP" box.

      Press the "Scout Now" button.

      View the statistics available.

      Click on the "Subscribe and Get Exclusive Neighborhood Crime Rates & Data" link.

      Press the subscribe plan you want to purchase. You can purchase six-month, three-month and one-month plans. Press the "Continue" button and enter your credit card information. The crime report includes information on your address such as public school quality, real estate appreciation rates and crime statistics.

    Crime Reports

      Navigate to Crimereports.com. Crime Reports offers free information on crimes but only includes crimes from the last 30 days. It does not offer additional information on your address.

      Enter your address in the "Search" box and click the "Search" button. The website will show crime information for your specific address.

      Press the appropriate neighborhood to see crime information for the area surrounding your address.

      Navigate to Relocationessentials.com

      Press the appropriate tab at the top of the site. For crime reports, press the "Crime" tab.

      Enter your zip code and press "Submit." The crimes are listed by risk factor on a 1 to 10 scale with 1 being low risk and 10 being high risk.

      Click on the links at the bottom of the page such as "View Homes for Sale" or "Cost of Living" for additional information on your neighborhood.

Tips & Warnings

  • For additional information on crimes, you can call the local police station and ask about the crime rate in an area. You can also check for this information on a city's police department website.
