How to Make Fleece Rag Blankets

Fleece rag blankets are very popular gifts right now. These are great blankets for babies or to keep around your home or in your car. Making a fleece rag blanket does not require any sewing, which makes this a great homemade gift for anyone who doesn't have a sewing machine or like to sew. You can use different patterns and solids, or you can use the same material for each square. If you know how to cut a straight line, you will have no problem making this blanket.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a square approximately 8 to 10 inches on your cardboard for your pattern. You can use a packaging box, cereal box or posterboard for your square.

    • 2

Cut out another square 2 inches smaller than your first pattern. If your first pattern was 10 inches, you would make an 8-inch square. If you have made an 8-inch square, you would now make a 6-inch square. On your second pattern, make a small mark every half inch.

    • 3

Using your larger pattern, cut out as many squares as you would like from your material. Eighty-one squares will make a perfect sized baby quilt.

    • 4

Place the smaller pattern in the center of the fleece square. At each line on the pattern, cut 2 inches in to the edge of the pattern. This step will make the fringe along the edges of the square.

    • 5

If you are using different patterns, place the squares on your floor or table in the pattern you would like. Take a step back to look at the pattern you have created to make sure it is the way you want it. If you are making a solid color blanket, you can skip this step.

    • 6

Take your first two squares, and tie each fringe together. Continue tying the squares together until they are all connected.

    • 7

Around the edge of the blanket, make a single knot in each individual fringe to make a nice edge.
