Things You'll Need

  • 4 yards of fleece (varying shades and patterns if you like)

  • Scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • 6-inch square of cardboard

Fleece blankets are warm and toasty to curl up with on cool winter evenings and they make welcome gifts for just about everyone on your Christmas list. While patchwork is most commonly used for quilts, it works well for fleece blankets, too. Even if you don't have any sewing talent at all -- or you'd rather leave the sewing machine collecting dust in the basement -- you can make a patchwork fleece blanket in colors that coordinate with your home's decor or use your gift recipient's favorite colors.

Step 1

Cut off any selvage edges from your fleece and then cut it into 8-inch squares.

Step 2

Center a 6-inch square of cardboard in the middle of a square of fleece. Trace around the cardboard using a pencil just enough so you can see the marks. Repeat this process with all of the fabric squares.

Step 3

Fringe all four edges of each fleece square by cutting from the edges of the squares to the pencil marks in the center. Cut the fringes 2 inches wide, creating 4 fringes on each side.

Step 4

Set two of the squares side by side with the wrong sides up if one side is patterned. Lift up the fringes and butt the uncut center of the squares right up against each other.

Step 5

Tie the opposite fringes together so you have four knots holding the two squares together.

Step 6

Add another square to one of the ends by tying knots in the same manner. Keep adding squares until you have a row of 10 squares tied together.

Step 7

Make another row in the same way. Tie the two rows together using the fringe-tying method.

Step 8

Keep making and adding rows until you have at least 10 rows of 10 squares.

Step 9

Arrange the outside fringes of the blanket by tying them together by twos. Start at one corner and work your way around the edge of the no-sew fleece blanket.

Tip

Use up any scraps of mismatched fleece you have lying around for an ecclectic blanket.

Make your fringes a little longer or shorter, if desired, by using a different size cardboard square.

Save time by cutting out your fleece squares whenever you have leftovers from another project.
