Selling Michigan real estate is a lucrative occupation in a thriving economy, and a challenging business during economic downturns. Real estate agents collect flat fees or commissions on sales for listing properties in Michigan. The state requires all agents to hold a current salesperson real estate license. Applicants for a Michigan real estate license must successfully completing a state approved real estate course. Agents also need sponsorship from a licensed real estate broker. A licensed agent who is employed by a broker can list properties.

      Complete a Michigan approved real estate course (see Resources). The state requires 40 hours of pre-licensure education in real estate fundamentals. State approved schools send your records to the Department of Energy Labor and Economic Growth to qualify you for licensing. You have 36 months to apply for a license after finishing the course.

      Pass the Michigan real estate exam. Visit the website of PSI Services (see Resources), the administering agency, to schedule a testing date.

      Secure employment with a sponsoring Michigan real estate broker. Your employing broker will have to sponsor you for licensing.

      Log on to the Michigan Bureau of Commercial Services iCOLA web portal (see Resources) to apply for a Michigan salesperson real estate license. Create a user account to pay the licensing fees online and fill out an application. Ask the broker for his 10 digit number to include on your license application. Notify your broker of your application submission so she can inform the state of your sponsorship.
