How to Set Up a Staging DNS for Our Website

The term "staging" is given to a server used to test software. A staging server is an exact replica of the "live" version of a website, so you can test to ensure that the Web application works properly. Domain Name System (DNS) is part of a Web application, so you must set up a staging DNS server for website testing on the internal network. Each Windows server operating system comes with DNS capabilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows server "Start" button, and select "Administrative Tools." Click "DNS Manager" to open the configuration console.

    • 2

Click the "Actions" menu item, and then click "Configure a DNS Server." This starts a wizard that helps guide you through DNS configuration for your network. Click "Next" in the first welcome window.

    • 3

Click "Create a forward lookup zone," and click "Next." On the next screen, leave the default "Yes, create a forward lookup zone now," and click "Next." Select "Primary Zone," and click "Next."

    • 4

    • 5

Type a name for your DNS file, which is stored on the server hard drive. Click "Next." Click the "Finish" button on the final screen to complete the setup.
