How to Open a Locked Oven

Typically, manufacturers of ovens use oven locks to prevent accidental opening of the oven door during or right after you cook with the oven or clean it using an electronic self-cleaning cycle. The locks are to prevent a person, especially children, from the heat and vapors produced inside the oven. The only way to open a locked oven is to unlock the door. The locking latch on your oven door may unlock manually with a handle or electronically via one or more keys on the oven's control panel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for your locked oven to cool completely after you use it to cook or clean.

    • 2

Check the oven display for the "Lock," "Unlocked," "Clean" or similar LED indicator or message to turn off or on depending on your oven model.

    • 3

Unlock the oven door manually or electronically. If you have an oven door that locks manually, slide the handle as far left as possible to the unlocked position. If you have an oven door that locks electronically, press the key or keys on the control panel that unlock the oven -- for example, a key with an icon of a padlock and an open shackle and/or the word "Unlock," the key that you originally used to set the lock such as "Lock," "Lockout" or "Clean" and/or keys that start or end control panel commands such as "Start," "Off" or "End."

    • 4

      Pull open the oven door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some ovens also unlock automatically without you needing to take any action at all. Simply wait for the indicator or message change and then pull open the oven door.
