Measure the trim to be installed. If the trim is less than 5/8 inch thick, choose a gun that can shoot 1 1/4-inch finish nails. If the trim is over 3/4 inch, choose a gun that can shoot 1 1/2-inch nails. If the measurement is less than 1/2 inch, choose a brad nailer. Use these for window and door trim and some baseboards.

Consider where the gun will be used. If it is to be used in tight spaces, such as inside cabinets, inside small windows or for small woodworking projects, choose a gun with an angled profile. If the gun is to be used on flat surfaces such as cabinet fascia, baseboard or crown molding, choose a straight profile gun.

Check the head of the nail. There are two different types. One type has a "T" shaped head. It's best for hardwoods. The other type has a round head, also known as a "pin" nail. It's best for hiding nails. Use it for fine furniture trim.

Tips & Warnings
Other types of nailers include portable firing mechanisms that use a powder charge like a firearm. These are not recommended unless there is no other power source available. Another model uses electricity; these too are not as reliable as pneumatic nailers.
