How to Gather Chakras

How to Gather Chakras thumbnail
Meditation can be done anywhere you feel at peace.

The word "chakra" comes from an ancient Sanskrit word that means wheel of life. Chakras are believed to be energy hot spots on the body that act as conductors, filtering energies from both heaven and earth that are drawn into the body. With beliefs rooted in Hinduism, it is said that chakras need to be gathered, or aligned, to function properly. This can be achieved through relaxation and meditation techniques you can preform in the comfort of your own home.

Find a place where you can relax comfortably. If you prefer being outside, be sure it is a safe place you can meditate without interruption. Don't wear restrictive clothing and make sure you are not too hot or too cold. When meditating at home, turn off your phone and any other distracting electronics. Take off any metal jewelry, as it may interfere with your energy flow. Have a light snack, a drink of water and go to the bathroom before you begin.

Sit down and cross your legs. Keep your back straight and rest the backs of your hands on your knees. Touch your index fingers to your thumbs if you wish. Close your eyes. Slow down your breathing and begin your meditation. Inhale deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth, focusing on each part of your body as you relax. Your body will feel heavier the more relaxed you get.

Focus on Muladhara, the Base Chakra, located at the bottom of the pelvis, around the base of the spine. As the Base Chakra is represented by the color red, picture a ball of red light gathering at the base of your spine and, like the roots of a tree, let it reach down into the earth while still connected to you. If you feel a rush or tingling sensation as you reach into the ground with the light, that is normal. Muladhara represents our connection to the earth and is related to our connection to the physical plane. This chakra will create a foundation connection to the earth and ground as you gather your other chakras.

Open Svadhisthana, the Sacral Chakra, located in the middle of your abdomen. This chakra represents your emotions, desires, sensations and sexuality. As it is represented by the color orange, picture a bright orange light gathering below your bellybutton. Focus on both open chakras before moving on to the next.

    • 5

Open Manipura, the Solar Plexus Chakra, which is located in the middle of the torso, around the pancreas. Picture a bright yellow light in the center of your belly, sitting below your ribcage. Otherwise known as the power chakra, it represents our will, our personal autonomy and metabolism. It's also said to maintain our energy levels and spontaneity. Stabilize your currently open chakras by focusing on each separate color before moving on to the next.

    • 6

Focus on Anahata, the Heart Chakra, which is located in the middle of the chest. Visualize a bright green point of light a few inches below your collarbone, in the center of your chest. It is representative of love and the balance of opposites within the human psyche. When this chakra is bright and healthy, it is believed that it allows a deep sense of compassion and peace. Stabilize your open chakras and move on.

    • 7

Open Vishudda, the Throat Chakra, which is located in the throat, paralleled to the thyroid glands. Focus on a bright blue light gathering in your throat, around your voice box. Representing creativity and self expression, it is associated with sound and language. At this point you may be feeling steady vibration throughout your body. This is normal. Make sure to focus on each open chakra color before moving on.

Focus on Anja, the Brow Chakra, which is located over the pineal gland between the eyebrows. As it is represented by a deep indigo or violet, visualize a point of bright indigo light between your eyebrows. Also known as the third eye, this chakra represents the art of seeing on both a physical and spiritual level. It helps to see situations more clearly and to observe beyond the obvious. Take a few moments to stabilize your chakras and continue.

    • 9

Open Sahasrara, the Crown Chakra, which is located on the crown of the head, or slightly above the crown of the head. Like with the Base Chakra, you want to visualize a point of light, represented by pure white or a bright purple, and extend it out beyond your body towards the sky. This will complete the chakra connection between the earth and the spiritual realm. This chakra connects our body to the spiritual beyond, to our thoughts and a sense of greater awareness. Focus on each chakra color for greater stabilization.

    • 10

Hold all chakras open for as long as you can, visualizing the colored light circulating through your body. Take time to relax further, continuing to check on each chakra as you meditate. During this time, you may feel vibrations, strange sensations or smells and may even have visual or auditory experiences. When you are ready to finish your meditation, slowly visualize drawing the light back into your Base Chakra and Crown Chakra. Open your eyes and take your time when standing back up.

  • Try using scented oils or soft music to help you relax while you meditate.

  • Meditate with a friend or member of your family. Afterward, share and discuss your experiences.
