How to Make a Picket Sign

Creating your own picket sign adds a feeling of sincerity to your cause, as opposed to using commercially made signs.

Protests are an American tradition. While some demonstrations have taken place in the cover of darkness and in disguise, such as the Boston Tea Party, far more have been performed in broad daylight for all to see. Nearly every march or rally is distinguished by one universal tool used for protesting: the picket sign. Whether it is a labor strike, a political protest or people boycotting a business, picket signs relay the purpose of the act. If you are going to take part in a demonstration, these signs will help to make your cause known.

Instructions

    • 1

Make your sign faces. Each picket sign should have two faces --- one for the front and one for the back --- so that the sign can be read by those standing in front of you and those behind you. Use the magic markers to write your message or messages on the foam boards. You use a different phrase on each side if you would like. Try to keep them succinct and write large enough so that the text will be legible at a distance.

    • 2

Staple the foam boards to the picket fence plank. Lay the plank on the ground and place one piece of foam board on top of it so that the message is visible. Align the foam board at the top of the plank so that the plank is centered, and staple the board to the plank. Turn the sign over so that the staple board is on the ground and place the other board on the other side of the plank. Line up the second piece of foam board with the first piece and staple it in place.

    • 3

Cut the plank so that it is a comfortable size to carry. Use the coping saw to shorten the plank as necessary. If the sign is too tall, it will be unwieldy and may be difficult to manage in windy conditions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a 48-inch-by-1-inch wooden dowel rod in place of a picket fence plank if that is more comfortable.
