How to Dynamat Your Trunk

How to Dynamat Your Trunk thumbnail
Dynamat helps reduce vibration and resonance from the subwoofer in your trunk.

Dynamat is a moldable vibration dampening material that employs vibro-acoustic energy conversion to also reduce resonance. By padding the trunk of your vehicle with Dynamat you can create a virtual sound barrier and dampener that should increase the base output from your subwoofer. This should give your system a cleaner sound. You can buy Dynamat at auto parts stores and dealers around the world.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a bulk kit, which contains nine cut sheets or about 36.2 feet of Dynamat. Once you bring the trunk kit home, set the Dynamat out in the sun for about an hour to make it more malleable.

    • 2

Remove the interior trunk lining by first popping off all the clips holding it in place using a flathead screwdriver. Set the clips aside for now, and pull out the liner.

    • 3

Pull the subwoofer out slightly and turn it around so the back of the woofer now faces you. Unscrew the amp from the back of the woofer. Set the screws aside, then remove the remaining wires from the back of the woofer.

    • 4

Lift the woofer completely out of the trunk. Pull out the trunk mat, then the floorboard itself. Remove the spare tire if you have one, and clear away any other debris that is sitting on the floor of the trunk.

    • 5

Take out the side paneling in the same way you did the top and bottom paneling and remove any other components that are in the way. Make sure to clean off any dirt or spots with rubbing alcohol.

    • 6

Measure and cut out pieces of the Dynamat before covering the interior of your trunk. To stick it to the surfaces in your trunk simply remove the paper backing, then use a rubber roller to ensure that the adhesive adheres to your trunk's interior. You will have to cut out holes in the material for all the screws in your trunk.

    • 7

Replace the various components, panels and lining in your trunk by reversing the previous steps.
