How to Disable a Finger Print Reader

How to Disable a Finger Print Reader thumbnail
A fingerprint reader can be disabled if it's not in use.

A fingerprint reader is a biometric security device installed on some types of computers. Designed to protect the integrity of the machine, fingerprint readers scan the owner's fingerprint to allow access to the computer or certain operations. For some applications, the fingerprint reader is extremely useful, such as in a corporate situation with sensitive documents and information. In other situations, the device can be an annoyance if you don't need extra security. In those cases, disabling a fingerprint reader takes just a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the computer. Click "Start." From the pop-up menu, right-click the "Computer" tab.

    • 2

Click "Manage" on the new pop-up menu that appears. A dual-pane window will open with a list on the left and sub-menus on the right.

    • 3

Click "Device Manager" in the left pane. A list of all devices installed on the computer will show on the right pane. Locate your fingerprint reader device in the listing.

    • 4

Right-click the fingerprint reader device. A small pop-up menu will show above the pane with selections for managing the reader. Click "Disable." Do not click "Uninstall" unless you want to permanently uninstall the driver that runs the reader. Uninstalling this will mean you cannot enable it without re-installing the device.

    • 5

Confirm that you want to disable the device if prompted, then close the pop-up menus.

    • 6

Restart your computer. The computer should now operate without the necessity of the fingerprint scan.

Tips & Warnings

  • To enable the fingerprint reader after disabling it, follow the same procedure and click "Enable" on the menu after right-clicking the fingerprint reader device.
