How to Make Barrettes for Babies
Barrettes are a great way to dress up your baby's look for special occasions like birthdays and baptisms. By making your own, you can save money and choose colors and adornments to coordinate with special outfits or with team or holiday colors. Because many babies have very little hair, you'll need special barrettes that are light and can grip to thin wisps of hair without pulling and making your baby uncomfortable.
Things You'll Need
- 1-inch strip of velcro
- 5-inch piece of ribbon
- Decorative plastic button
- Needle and thread or hot glue gun
Instructions

1
Cut a 1-inch strip of velcro into a circle approximately 1/2 inch in diameter and pull the interlocking sides apart.
-
2
Tie a 5-inch piece of ribbon into a simple bow.

-
3
Place a decorative button in the center of the bow.
-
4
Stitch the button and bow to the velcro with a needle and thread, making sure the interlocking pieces of velcro are separated so you are only sewing the ribbon to one piece. Instead of sewing, you can glue the button and ribbon to the velcro piece with a hot glue gun, making sure to let it dry sufficiently before use.

5
Place the velcro against a small section of your baby's hair and attach the interlocking velcro piece underneath the hair to secure in place.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of ribbon, you can cut brightly colored felt into fun shapes like animals or Christmas trees and sew or glue to the velcro.
