How to Get in the Cab of a Truck
A tractor trailer cab is extremely large and may be difficult to enter safely, especially for someone of short stature. Climbing into a big truck cab could also be dangerous during wet or icy weather, when improper entry methods could result in a fall and injury. A few basic steps will help anyone enter a large truck cab safely and easily. Drivers should follow these steps as a general habit to avoid injury and during testing for a commercial driver's license to avoid losing safety points.

1
Check the steps and handles of the cab for grease, fuel, oil, slick mud or ice. Clean off all residue before entering the cab. Keep all entry steps as clean as possible to eliminate slipping and injury.
-
2
Maintain a minimum of three points of contact between your body and the cab at all times during entry. Focus on your entry, avoiding distraction, which may result in injury.
-
-
3
Place one foot on the step while keeping the other foot securely on the ground. Grip the handle on the inside of the door with one hand and the handle on the exterior cab frame with the other. Notice the three points of contact -- two hands and one foot.
-
4
Move your lower foot to the top step, pulling your body up with your arms if necessary. There are still three points of contact.
-
5
Bring your rear foot to the top step. Both feet are now on the top step, so you may release one handle and still maintain three points of contact.
-
6
Slide or step into the cab and release the remaining handle, because you are now safely inside.
