You may have made the mistake of turning on the key while installing your car radio without plugging in car airbag components. Doing this will cause your airbag light to flash, and it can be distracting if you leave it on as it is. Luckily, you can reset and turn off your airbag light. You can also recheck the connectors in case the light fails to turn off. Turning off the airbag light yourself can save you a trip to your car dealer.

1. Turn on the ignition switch

Turn on the ignition switch with your car key. The switch is often located beside the steering wheel, and it has four positions: on, off, start and accessories. Some vehicles include two off positions for the lock and off, one allows your key to be removed from your car ignition while the other allows you to turn off the car.

2. Wait for the airbag warning light to turn off

Wait for the airbag warning light to turn off. This usually takes around seven seconds. Turn the ignition off a second after the airbag light has turned off.

3. Turn the ignition back off

Turn the ignition switch of your car back off for a little longer than three seconds.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3

Repeat steps 1 through 3 twice to make three times total.

5. Turn your ignition switch back on

Turn your ignition switch back on to fully reset the airbag light. Once you start your car, your airbag light should turn on for around seven seconds before finally turning off.

Tips

If your airbag light fails to reset or turn off, your airbag system may have a problem. You need to either pay for a specialist to diagnose the problem further or troubleshoot the system yourself. Make sure to follow the recommended steps of your vehicle’s manufacturer.
