How to Sign a Car Title in Minnesota

How to Sign a Car Title in Minnesota thumbnail
Selling a car in Minnesota is not as simple as just handing over the keys.

When selling a car in Minnesota, you must transfer ownership by recording the transfer on the title. The buyer and seller must both properly complete the application located on the original title, sign it, and return it to the Department of Vehicle Services. You can use negotiable, duplicate, salvage or distinctive titles to transfer ownership. Transferring ownership is a simple process but to avoid potential pitfalls, complete the title transfer at a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services office.

Instructions

    • 1

      Obtain the original title.

    • 2

Take the title to a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services office to have a DVS agent check it for outstanding liens.

    • 3

Complete all blanks on the certificate of title. Include all sale information requested.

    • 4

Add a lien release if a lien exists on the title.

    • 5

      Sign the certificate.

    • 6

Complete the "Seller's Notice of Sale" and remove it from the title.

    • 7

Mail the title and completed "Seller's Notice of Sale" to a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services office. If you completed and signed the title and notice of sale at a DVS office, turn both in to a DVS agent directly.
