How to Get Toll-Free VoIP

How to Get Toll-Free VoIP thumbnail
VOIP phone lines use the Internet to connect calls.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phones deliver telephone communications over the Internet. VOIP phones can be wireless or connected to a LAN cable or phone jack. Toll-free numbers offer callers a method of dialing your long-distance number without incurring long-distance charges, although the number holder will have to pay a fee for the number. Current toll-free number holders can switch their number to a VOIP provider as part of establishing VOIP service. Toll-free numbers refer to numbers with area codes of 800, 866 or 888.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign up for VOIP service. Most VOIP providers allow setup through their websites or by calling one of their operators. VOIP providers include Vonage, Magic Jack and Lingo. All three of these companies provide toll-free numbers as well as allow for switching a toll-free number to their service. When establishing a new service, provide name, address, Social Security number and credit card information.

Review calling plans and order the plan that is right for you. Submit your toll-free number when prompted to indicate whether to use an existing number or get a new number. A service adapter will be sent to you through the mail. The service adapter will turn your current phone line into a VOIP line.

Log in to your VOIP account. Check the option to add a feature. Pick toll-free number if you need to add a toll-free number to an existing VOIP account. Alternatively, call your VOIP provider and request a toll-free number be added to your account.
