1
Create a Craigslist account online and post an ad in the "Lessons & Tutoring" section. Specify your location. Provide your email address or phone number so prospective students can contact you. You can share your rate in your ad's text or wait for students to contact you for that information. Create a title that will catch a student's eye. Craigslist sees an enormous amount of traffic and will probably be one of the first places a prospective ESL student will look for a tutor.

2
Sign up to create a tutor profile on Care, another free website where you can advertise ESL lessons. Upload a profile with a picture and add your availability and experience level. Include a video of yourself for extra exposure. This website targets younger students, so specify the grade levels you can teach, how far you can travel, and where you want to teach lessons.

3
Create a profile on Tutor Match, a free website created specifically for connecting tutors to students. Make a profile page with your information, experience level and tutoring rates. Allow two weeks for Tutor Match to process your profile and add you to the website, where students looking for an ESL tutor can find you.

4
Advertise yourself as an ESL tutor in your local area by creating posters and fliers and posting them where non-English speakers hang out. Make your fliers colorful and eye-catching so that people will stop to look at them. Cut tabs on the bottom and write your contact information on them, so people can easily tear them off to contact you later. Post your fliers or posters around college campuses near where students take English or ESL classes.
-
5
Tell your friends, family, neighbors and church members that you teach private ESL lessons. Your contacts may know people interested in hiring an English tutor. If you already have ESL students, offer them a free lesson for each person they refer to you who takes lessons. Gaining more and more students will become easier and easier as your network expands.

Tips & Warnings
In addition to your qualifications, add a personal touch to your advertisement by telling a little about your personal life, like whether or not you are married, how many kids you have, and what you like to do in your free time.
Do not try to post the same advertisement on Craigslist more than once a day -- Craigslist will not allow it.
Be careful when meeting new students who have responded to your ads. Meet in a public location to protect your safety.
