If you're planning to move, save money by renting a moving truck or trailer instead of hiring a professional moving company to transport your household goods. You should reserve your truck or trailer well in advance if you want to save some money, especially if you're planning to move during the summer or at the end of the month.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine the size of moving truck or trailer that you need, based on the number of rooms to be moved. General guidelines indicate a 24-foot truck for moving eight rooms, a 20-foot truck for five rooms, a 15-foot truck for three rooms, and a cargo van or trailer for a small load of household goods.

  2. Step 2

Contact rental companies about driver requirements, including minimum age, driving records and special licenses.

  3. Step 3

Check your auto insurance policy to see if coverage is provided for truck and van rentals.

  4. Step 4

Obtain rental prices on the truck size that you need for the move by completing online information forms or calling rental companies in your local area. Check on availability of trucks during your scheduled move dates.

  5. Step 5

If you're planning to rent a trailer, check the dealer's requirements for towing. Arrange for a trailer hitch to be installed on your car, if necessary.

  6. Step 6

Reserve a rental truck for the dates of your move.

  7. Step 7

Ask the rental dealer for special instructions for operating a rental truck and review them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rental companies do not usually require a special driver's license to operate a rental truck for personal use, but many require that drivers be at least age 25.
  • Many auto insurance policies do not cover truck or van rentals. Additional insurance may be necessary for protection during your move.

on 2/16/2009 It is best to call and reserve a truck and dolly 6-8 weeks before your move. You want to make sure you get that week or date for your move.

on 9/16/2008 It appears that its your way or the highway. This rental agency communicated to you. Maybe they should have called you the morning of your rental and surprised you even more. You just didn't like the fact that they had you pick up the rental at the closest available location with the equipment. This is not a scam. Look the word up in the dictionary. You were advised of this when you made the reservation. This should be no surprise to you. Try to rent a trailer from Penske or Budget. They don't carry them. Lets talk convenience now !

on 7/31/2008 tells me that the only thing she can do is provide a small truck for $600; this is an obvious bait and switch, and I advised her that I would reluctantly pick up the trailer from the Niles IL location, but that after my move I would be filing a report with my local BBB in regards to their unethical and illegal business practices. I then hung up on the woman.

on 7/31/2008 U Haul is a bunch of SCAM artists. I rented a trailer online, and that evening got a voice mail from their district office. The message from Sandy said that they may not have a trailer available at my selected pickup location, and the caller offered me a small truck for the same rate. I called them back the next morning (as I didn't get the message until after they'd closed), and the idiot I spoke to (apologies to idiots everywhere, I can't call her what I REALLY want to) tells me that I can pick up at a different location. I told her that I preferred not to pick up there as the staff at that site were quite rude and took their time helping me when I turned equipment in (they made me wait ten minutes, and took care of a customer that had come in AFTER me before helping or acknowledging me). I mentioned the message from the previous night; and the person at U Haul (I forget her name)

on 2/24/2008 I'm currently planning a move of just over 1,200 miles. I live in an urban area and when I did the rate quote online with UHAUL, the price was $645 for a 6x10' trailer. When I put in a pick up location just 35 miles south of here, in a more rural area, the price dropped to just $209. It's definitely work the short drive to pick up the trailer and save over $400!!
