How to Troubleshoot a 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 4X4

The 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 was an all-terrain vehicle produced by the Minnesota-based Polaris Industries. The company is also a leading manufacturer in snowmobiles and formerly watercraft as well. The Sportsman 500 is one of 21 ATV models produced that year by the company. This model featured an LCD instrument cluster for reading the ATV speed and gauges. Troubleshooting your vehicle is a wise way of identifying what could sometimes be a simple solution to what you assume is a big problem. Troubleshooting first before seeing a mechanic can save you time and money.

Instructions

  1. Engine Overheating

    • 1

Remove and clean the screen in front of the ATV if the engine overheats. Occasionally a dirty screen will prevent proper airflow to the radiator and engine, causing overheating. The screen can be removed by pulling out the top first, followed by the lower portion of the screen.

    • 2

Use a garden hose with medium pressure to unplug a clogged radiator. The hose will brush away debris stuck inside each of the radiator fins.

    • 3

Look at the cooling fan, which is located next to the radiator. Many times, debris can get caught in there as well. Clean thoroughly with the garden hose. Restart your vehicle, and let it run to see if it overheats again.

Engine Won't Start, Stalls Or Misfires

    • 4

Check your fuel level, and if you are out of gas, then refuel. Check the fuel vent line also, because it can get crimped and block the flow of fuel to the engine.

    • 5

Refuel as soon as possible, because there may be water present in the fuel tank, which is affecting performance.

    • 6

Inspect and ensure the ignition connections on the spark plugs are all tightened. Loose ignition connections could also result in engine failure. Replace the spark plugs, if necessary. They might have to be changed if the ATV has been used a lot. It is recommended you see a Polaris dealer to replace the spark plugs if you are not familiar with the replacement techniques.

    • 7

Inspect the battery voltage, and ensure it is correct. Recharge if voltage is too low (less than 12 volts). You can also inspect the air filter, and clean it of any debris, as this could also be a reason the engine is stalling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not attempt to make a repair you are not confident in making yourself. When in doubt, always visit a Polaris service center.
