How to Create a Public Certificate

Certificates are files created on your Windows server computer to encrypt data. A public certificate is a self-signed certificate used to test your Internet Information Services, or IIS, function. They are typically used by developers to create encrypted applications. IIS has a certificate creation wizard that helps you create a public certificate for your Windows Web host server. It only takes a few steps to create the certificate.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Administrative Tools." Click "Internet Information Services Manager" to open the IIS console.

    • 2

Click your Web server name on the left side of the window. Double-click "Server Certificates." Click the link in the Actions pane labeled "Create Self-Signed Certificate."

    • 3

Type a name for your certificate. Click "OK" to create it on your computer. Now that it is created, you must bind it to the website.

    • 4

Click "Bindings" to open a new window. Click "Add." Select "HTTPS" from the drop-down menu and then select your website in the "Website" drop-down menu. Click "OK" to save your settings.
