A Garmin Nuvi is a handy tool to have when traveling or just trying to figure out how to get to a new restaurant. The Nuvi is a type of global positioning system (GPS) device that allows users to find their location and directions to other locations with the touch of their fingertips. Because various Nuvi models have so many similar features, deciding which Nuvi is best can be confusing. For example, while both the Nuvi 855 and Nuvi 1490T offer turn-by-turn directions, the Nuvi 855 offers basic features and the Nuvi 1490T offers more expanded uses.

1. Decide which display size is right for you. The Nuvi 855 features a 4.3-inch display, making it easier to remove from the car and carry in a pocket than the Nuvi 1490T. The Nuvi 1490T features a 5-inch display, making it easier to read on the dashboard.

2. Factor in the different features offered by each model. The Nuvi 855 offers voice recognition software that allows the driver to find an address by just saying it. The Nuvi 1490T offers subscription-free, real-time traffic updates so users can be aware of traffic conditions that are ahead of them. The Nuvi 1490T also offers Bluetooth capability, which allows the Nuvi 1490T's built-in microphone to be used to talk on a cellphone hands-free in a car.

3. Compare prices. The Nuvi 855 costs about $120, while the Nuvi 1490T costs about $299 (in 2010). The Nuvi 855, however, has been discontinued.
