How to Drill Holes in Plexiglass Without Cracking

How to Drill Holes in Plexiglass Without Cracking thumbnail
Drill holes in plexiglass slowly to prevent cracking.

Drilling into plexiglass does not require any specialized tools. What it does require is patience, as you will have to take it slowly in order not to crack the glass. Plexiglass, which has been around since the 1930's, is a shatter resistant thermoplastic. It can be brittle when under pressure and may crack, although it will not likely break apart.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp the plexiglass to a hard, level surface, such as a scrap piece of wood or sheet of drywall.

    • 2

Put masking tape on the area where you wish to drill to prevent cracking. Mark where the hole should go on the masking tape.

    • 3

Install a drill bit suitable for glass and tile or metal. Start with a small bit to drill a pilot hole, then increase the size of the bit to the desired size of the hole you want. For example, if you want to drill a 1-inch hole, start with a 1/8-inch drill bit and work up to a 1-inch bit.

    • 4

Press the drill bit against the mark where you wish to drill and begin to drill. Proceed slowly and do not press too hard. When you have drilled through, remove the drill and blow away any dust. If the hole needs to be enlarged, add the next drill bit, press it against the hole and begin drilling until you have drilled through.

Tips & Warnings

  • Proceed slowly and don't press down hard on the drill.
