How to Convert 2-D Dwg to 3-D

A Dwg file is a file format used for storing design data, often in 2-D or 3-D. If you have a 2-D Dwg file that needs to be converted to a 3-D image file, that is not easily done. However, with SolidWorks, you can get the job done, and turn your two-dimensional sketches into a 3-D solid. With features like automatic drawing view creation, dimensioning, annotation, drawing control, flattened harness drawing and more, SolidWorks is the best solution for converting 2-D Dwg files to 3-D.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a DWG 2-D file directly in SolidWorks. Select the method to open this DWG file. Choose Option 3: "Import to a new part." (This option will allow you to convert to 3-D.) Click "Next."

    • 2

Uncheck all of the layers except "Object." SolidWorks recognizes all the layers in the DWG, so any that are not off can be turned off. This saves having to delete them in SolidWorks. Click "Next."

    • 3

Choose the units you want it to be built in, and check "Merge points" box. Change distance to 0.1, because the merge points and the distance allow any "fudged" lines and double lines to be sorted out automatically based on your specifications.

    • 4

Select "To a 2-D sketch" button, and choose what plane you want it to come in on. Click "Finish." (The 2-D to 3-D tool bar pops up.)

    • 5

Choose "Box select" for the view which you want to set as the front view. Click "Front" on the 2-D to 3-D toolbar. Do the same with the right, left, top and any other views you may have brought in.

    • 6

Move the views or sketches closer together by selecting the view/sketch you want to move first, then select the line you want to line it up to and click "Align" on the toolbar. The sketch selected first will then move.

    • 7

Exit the sketch and you will have a sketch for each view from the DWG file. Any of these can be edited or dimensioned as required.

    • 8

Using Instant 3-D, hold the "ALT" key to use an Up to Vertex condition so the sketches can then be extruded up to one another. Save the file.
