How to Count Motorcycle Chain Length

How to Count Motorcycle Chain Length thumbnail
A motorcycle chain transfer power from the engine to the rear wheel.

A correctly sized motorcycle chain transfers the power from the transmission to the sprocket without failing under power. When put under the strain of acceleration, a loose chain will come off the wheel sprocket, and a chain with excessive tension may snap. The amount of links in a chain determines the chain length. Counting the links correctly -- without double-counting or missing a link -- is key to installing the correct chain for your motorcycle.

Instructions

    • 1

      Shift the motorcycle into neutral.

    • 2

Place cardboard on the floor of your work area. Push the motorcycle onto the cardboard. Set the motorcycle on a center stand. Reset the motorcycle if it does not sit steady in the stand.

    • 3

Spray brake cleaner on the motorcycle chain. Wipe the chain with a rag to remove built up grease.

    • 4

Write a "1" on the front of one motorcycle chain link. Spin the rear wheel of the motorcycle. Count and mark each chain link until the chain returns to the "1."

    • 5

Write down the number of links in the chain. Recount the number of chain links a second time to confirm the number.

    • 6

Remove the motorcycle from the center stand.
