How to Install a Water Pump in a 40 Evinrude Outboard Motor
The Evinrude 40 outboard motor's water pump is mounted inside the top of the lower unit, the part at the very bottom of the outboard. When you check the water pump after every 100 hours of normal operation, as recommended by Evinrude, you may have to install a new impeller -- the "pump" part of the water pump -- if the old impeller is cracked or if the water pump housing is cracked.
Things You'll Need
- Socket wrench
- Pump/impeller replacement kit
- White marine grease
- Gasket sealing compound
- Torque wrench

1
Press a new driveshaft seal into the opening at the top of the water pump housing. Drive the seal into position with the seal lips facing the tool, using a socket wrench. Seat the seal in the opening, remove the socket and apply white marine grease to the seal.

2
Press a new water tube grommet into the small opening at the top of the water pump housing. Apply gasket sealing compound to the replacement impeller plate gasket. Press the gasket into position on the surface of the lower unit cover and then place the impeller plate over the gasket.

3
Apply a dab of white marine grease on the drive pin and position the pin in the driveshaft. Apply a thin coat of grease to the impeller housing opening. Slide the impeller downward on the driveshaft so the groove in the impeller aligns and slides over with the drive pin.

4
Slide the pump housing down the driveshaft, fitting it over the impeller. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise by hand as the housing engages the impeller. Position the water pump over the retaining studs on the lower unit.
-
5
Apply a coating of gasket sealing compound the threads of the water pump retaining studs. Install the lock washers and nuts, tightening the nuts to 75 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.
