Register your phone number with the National Do Not Call list. According to the Elder Consumer Protection Project, you can register your phone number with the National Do Not Call list by calling 1-888-382-1222 or by visiting and registering online at the National Do Not Call Registry website.

Contact the company or organization soliciting the calls directly and request your name and number be taken off their list. According to the Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division, federal law requires telephone solicitors to stop making calls to you and to keep a record of your request for 10 years if you've asked them not to call. Be sure to ask nicely, as most companies are always willing to remove your personal information from their database if asked in a polite manner.

Use an answering machine or caller ID. Answering machines and caller ID allow individuals the ability to screen their calls. Contact your phone company to get caller ID installed. You can also get an answering machine and install it yourself.
