How to Change Address Details

How to Change Address Details thumbnail
The USPS provides services to change your address details.

The U.S. Postal Service offers options to change your address details for a $1 verification fee, through its website or by telephone. You can also go to your local post office to pick up a free change of address packet. USPS online service includes change options such as adding or removing a household member, relocation to a different city or state, a name change after a divorce or stopping mail for deceased persons.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the USPS website link called "All Products and Services." Follow the link through to "Change Your Address Online" and complete the required information to change your address details. A household member listed at your address should complete an address change if he no longer resides there.

    • 2

Call the USPS "Telephone Change of Address" number at 1-800-275-8777 (see Resources). You must have a credit or debit card to use this option because the postal service electronically verifies your information with the bank that issued your card. The $1 verification fee pays for this service and provides a secure transaction.

Go to your local post office and pick up the change of address packet available at the forms table. You can fill it out there and give it to a clerk, or take it home and mail it back to the post office. You must state your identity as self, guardian, executor or authorized person to make the address changes. Temporary or permanent address changes usually take seven to 10 days to go into effect.
