How to Connect My Scan Tool thumbnail
Learn how to properly connect your scan tool to read the diagnostic codes.

Vehicles are equipped with an internal computer module. When a component begins to fail within your vehicle, the computer sends a code to illuminate the "Check Engine" light on the instrument panel. This alerts the driver that there is a problem that must be addressed immediately. To learn what code is causing the problem and what the code stands for, you must have a scan tool. The scan tool hooks up to the computer connector and reads the codes. It's important to learn how to properly connect the scan tool to ensure you can diagnose and fix your vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the connection cable into the scan tool. The cable comes with the tool and plugs into the bottom of the unit.

    • 2

Locate the vehicle DLC connector. The connector is found under the vehicle dash on the driver side of the steering wheel column for regular vehicles. For heavy-duty vehicles, the connector is found behind the driver side kick panel. Lift the kick panel out towards you and you will see the connector.

    • 3

Plug the cable from the scan tool into the connector. You will hear the cable click into place. The scan tool is now connected and ready for use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on using the specific scan tool.
