Steps to Starting a Computer Repair Business

Steps to Starting a Computer Repair Business thumbnail
There are a lot of computers out there that need repairing.

As computers become more affordable and user friendly, more people are buying them every day. However, not everyone is equipped with the knowledge or patience to repair their own machines. Thus, a demand for computer repair businesses is created. With such seemingly-high demand for computer repairmen, it may seem like an easy task to get clients right away, but it can a lot harder than it appears. Your top priority should be getting your name out in the open and letting people know what services you can offer.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply for a business license and a Federal Tax ID number. Business licenses can be applied for at your city or town clerk's office. The process and laws vary from state to state so your town or city clerk will be able to give you more information about whether you need to apply for other licenses. The Internal Revenue Service has an online application process for Federal Tax ID numbers, also known as employer identification numbers, which you'll find in Resources.

Design and print business cards. Your business card should have a professional but unique look. Design a logo for your business and be sure the card includes your phone number, mobile phone number, e-mail address and physical address. Print at least 1,000 cards and hand them out everywhere you go. Small business owners and people with home offices can be some of your best customers.

    • 3

Take out a small ad in one or more local papers. Be brief and supply an overview of the services you offer along with your contact information. Start small and take an ad out with your city or town's newspaper and, when you're ready to cast a wider net, contact newspapers in surrounding towns or that offer regional or statewide service.

    • 4

Keep yourself up to date on the latest technologies, hardware, software and operating systems. Subscribe to computer and technology interest magazines and buy textbooks on the various operating systems and computer software and study them closely to develop a broad, working knowledge of different computer systems.

Build a collection of tools and computer parts. You'll need screwdrivers, a soldering gun and a variety of computer parts like hard drives, processors, memory, cooling fans, cables, modems and routers. Don't worry about buying too many new parts, but it can be a good idea to keep a stock for customers that might not want to wait for you to order replacement parts. Routers can be handy to keep around for customers that want to set up home or office networks but don't know how to do it themselves.
