Whirlpool suggests that the water filter should be changed at least every six months to keep the water tasting fresh and clean. Changing it out is a fairly easy endeavor. Whirlpool places its water filters either tucked into the grille at the base of the appliance or in the upper right corner of the interior of the fridge.

Locate the water filter and lift the plastic filter door. Throw the used water filter away after it is removed. Open the new filter, removing the protective coverings from the O-rings. Insert the new water filter gently into the housing and rotate it until the notches are properly aligned with the grooves.

Make sure the filter door is closed or it may cause the system to beep an alarm. Run a few gallons of water through the line so that the new filter is flushed properly. Reset the status by pressing and holding the water filter button for at least 3 seconds until it turns blue.
