Check if this car has a manual or automatic transmission by running the VIN.

A vehicle identification number (VIN), is a 17-character "fingerprint" for cars and trucks. Any vehicle manufactured after 1978 has the VIN located in several places on the vehicle, including the dashboard, doors and frame. This allows for vehicle identification in the event of severe damage from accident or fire. Running the VIN at any vehicle history report website costs about $30, but is a more efficient way to identify the make and model of a car, as well as verify options such as restraint systems, transmission types and engine codes.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your VIN. It is located on your dashboard in the lower left corner near the base of the windshield. You can also find it in documents for your vehicle such as a purchase agreement, title, or insurance.

    • 2

Open the Internet browser on your computer and navigate to your preferred vehicle history report website, such as CARFAX or AutoCheck (see Resources).

    • 3

Enter the VIN. After entering your VIN, you will be prompted to register with the company's website. Register and enter your billing and payment information.

    • 4

Create your account and select to run your vehicle history report. Some websites will display your results immediately, while others may email them to you.

    • 5

Read the report thoroughly. Information about the make, model and options included with the car are at the beginning of the report.
