How to Test Jet Boat Engines
Whether you are purchasing a jet boat for the first time or picking up a used boat from a previous owner, checking the engine is one of the first priorities to ensure you are getting a good deal. While there are numerous professional tests that you can complete if you have access to specialized tools and knowledge, there are also a variety of tests that you can perform on your own with regular tools and knowledge to make sure you are purchasing a working jet boat and not a lemon.

1
Inspect the jet boat engine thoroughly and look for cracks in the metal, leaking gaskets, hoses and pipes. Run your fingers around gaskets and bolts going into the engine and check your fingers for oil. Clean engines are not always a sign of no leaks since the engine may have been washed and shampooed with special cleaner prior to your arrival.

2
Check the oil levels for the engine prior to starting it. Look down into the oil pan through the filler hole to see if you can inspect any of the internal parts before you run the engine. Check for oil sludge and corrosion if you are purchasing a used jet boat to ensure that the engine has been taken care of over time, or if it has been poorly maintained.

3
Check the belts of the engine and look for signs of wear and tear, such as fraying or cracking. These belts will need to be replaced before you take the boat out to ensure you do not have any accidents or incidents where you are stranded due to the engine halting after a belt breaks.

4
Start the engine while the motor is dry-docked or in its berth. Listen for sounds such as engine coughing or sputtering, as this could indicate poor air flow, indicating the need for filter replacements, or a poor fuel line. Take the boat out for a test drive and ensure that both of the jet engines are working. When you turn, the control steering system should kick on and automatically reverse the opposite engine, so that you can spin the boat on a dime.
