How to Carry a Gun on a Sling
Attaching a sling to your hunting rifle will make it easier to carry. The sling attaches the rifle to your body, leaving your hands free for map reading or sighting targets using binoculars. You must remain aware of weapon safety when using a guns sling. Ensure the sling does not impede the line of shot and keep the muzzle pointed away from your body and others around you at all times.

Hang the hunting rifle over either shoulder, keeping the muzzle pointed upwards and away from the back of the head. Hook your thumb through the sling to keep the rifle under control when walking through hunting areas. Do not use this carrying method if someone is behind you or when you are walking through heavy brush or rough terrain.

Hang the hunting rifle to the front of the body holding the stock with your right hand and the forestock with your left. Keep the muzzle pointed away from the body at all times. Keep the rifle at a tilted angle with the stock lower than the muzzle. Do not use this carrying method if people are with you to your left side.

Sling the hunting rifle on your back with the muzzle pointing to the ground. This is probably the safest method of carrying your weapon when in company of other hunters. You may not be able to fire a quick shot using this carrying method, but it is the safest when walking through rough and sloping terrains.
