Picket fences are a classic addition to your outdoor space. There are many options for decorating your picket fence throughout the year. In warmer weather, you may choose to hang flower boxes over the fences, and, during the harvest season, you can tie cornstalks and scarecrows along the fence. During winter months, evergreen garland and lights are an ideal way to accentuate the classic beauty of your picket fence. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Flower boxes, with hangers
  • Cornstalks
  • Garden twine
  • Ornamental corn bunches
  • Scarecrows
  • Garland

Instructions

    • 1

      Hang flower boxes along the front side of the picket fence by sliding the hangers over the top horizontal board that runs along the fence. Space the boxes so that one box is in the center of each fence panel between each of the posts. You can purchase boxes with an assortment of flowers already in them or plant your own flowers.

      Gather bunches of dried cornstalks and ornamental corn bunches, and place them on each side of the fence opening during the fall. Tie a bunch of cornstalks to each side of the gateposts with garden twine. Tie ornamental corn bunches to each fence post and a bunch of cornstalks to each corner post.

      Place a scarecrow in the center between each fence post. Tie the scarecrows to the center pickets with twine.

      Remove the fall decorations at the end of the season. String evergreen garland along the top of the pickets allowing them to hang down in the center of the panels between fence posts. Secure the garland to the fence with garden twine.

      Cut off the dead flowers, and replace them by laying an arrangement of evergreen boughs in each planter box.
