As with any test, being prepared is essential and usually, the key to doing well. Some tests, like the General Educational Development exam, require that an essay be written to test your skills in writing. There are several things you can do to brush up on your writing skills in order to produce a fluid, competent essay for the test. Via writing exercises, reading and above all, practice, passing this portion of the GED can be a lot less stressful.

  • Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style"
  • A GED Practice Book
  • Paper & Pen or Computer
  • A Scheduled GED Test

      Once you have purchased Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style," read it immediately. Although thin, this book is full of rich information that will provide you with key skills necessary for improving your writing skills. Written in an easy to read, fun style, it is sure to improve your writing.

      As you continue to read the book, complete all exercises.

      Once finished with "The Elements of Style," begin reading and practicing the essay portion of any GED Study Guide. They are available online and at most book stores.

      Complete the exercises in your GED Study Guide. These books have actual essay topics seen on the test in the past.

      Go to your scheduled GED test and put your new writing skills to the test. If all these steps were followed, you should have passed the essay portion with no problem at all.

  • As with anything, practice makes perfect. The more exercises and reading you do from these two sources, the better you will do on the test.
