How to Convert a Car Accessory Socket to Power

Converting a vehicle's power port for alternating current requires a simple inverter.

Vehicle accessory outlets are typically used for plugging in devices that can use 12 volts direct current without the need for an inverter. Laptop computers, cell phones and handheld gaming systems are the targets for these types of jacks. However, using a device that needs 120 volts alternating current requires an inverter. Low-amperage devices can interface directly with the existing accessory plug, making the wiring simple and removable as needed.

Things You'll Need

• AC power inverter

Instructions

1. Flip up or otherwise access the vehicle's power port.

2. Plug the cigarette lighter adapter included with the inverter into the vehicle's power port.

3. Set the inverter's switch to the AC voltage requirement. This information is on the connected device's "CE" or "UL" label on the bottom of the unit.

4. Plug the device's AC power cord into the inverter.

Tips & Warnings

• When connecting more than one device, add up the total wattage of all devices. Add 50 percent to this figure to take into consideration sudden surges in the power draw.

• Do not start a vehicle in an enclosed space.

• Do not run the inverter directly off battery power, unless a second battery has been installed specifically for accessory use.
