How to Install New Lights on a Motorcycle

Install lights on your custom motorcycle.

Whether you are installing brand new lights such as a headlight, or upgrading to aftermarket signal lights and accessory lights, or simply need to replace older lights on a used motorcycle, lights are one of the easiest ways to add a little extra to your ride. While you can design a variety of custom lights that can be installed anywhere on the bike, headlights and other common lights are sold in kits that can be installed with little to no working knowledge, so long as you have access to basic hand tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any of the old lights from the motorcycle (if applicable, since new motorcycles will not require this step). Use a screwdriver, socket or wrench (depending on the make/model of motorcycle) to unscrew the mounting bolts and bracket. Detach any wire connections, and remove the light frame from the framing of the motorcycle.

    • 2

Unpackage the light kit, and sort through the various pieces to ensure that everything is there according to the manufacturer's instructions. Decide where you want to mount the controller unit (usually under the seat with the battery and other electrical components) if you need to install a new one, and attach it accordingly. Run the wiring somewhere discreet so that you do not see it while driving the bike.

    • 3

Put the new lights in place of the old ones, or mount your new lights on the frame of the bike wherever you see fit. Attach the existing wiring (either the old wiring or the new wiring from the new connector) to the new lights, and plug them into the blinkers, headlights or other accessory lights. Tighten the bolts into the corresponding mounting brackets with a wrench, socket or screwdriver.

    • 4

Run any wiring along the frame of the bike or under the tank to keep it out of view. Attach the wiring harness to the battery (for new motorcycles only, since older bikes will already have a wiring harness in place). Start the engine, and check the lights to ensure the power is running properly to them.
