How to Fix the CHKDSK Utility

CHKDSK can fix PC errors.

The "CHKDSK" utility, also called "Scan Disk," is a pre-installed Windows program that scans the computer's hard drive (C drive) and automatically fixes any errors. It usually runs automatically if a user shuts down the computer unexpectedly, or an administrator can manually run it. If you find that your computer constantly runs the CHKDSK program on startup or if it freezes mid-scan, there is most likely a registry error that is preventing it from running normally.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on your PC. Click "Start" and "Run."

Type the command "cmd" in the white box and press the "Enter" button. The Command Prompt box will launch momentarily.

    • 3

Type "chkntfs /x c" into the Command Prompt and press "Enter." This command tells the CHKDSK utility to stop running at startup.
