Instructions

Cover the entire surface of the kitchen counter; think of this as the background for the work of art your buffet will become. Try to find some tea towels with scalloped edges so that you can iron in a crease and make a border around the edges of the counter. Alternatively, if you're concerned about easy cleanup, buy a length of red vinyl or a vinyl Christmas tablecloth with a small overall pattern. Cut the vinyl just wide enough to cover the counter and hang down about 6 inches over the edge. Red and white gingham can give the buffet a country Christmas look.

Place winding greenery between the serving pieces. Plan ahead by taking all of the empty serving bowls and platters you are going to use and setting them on the counter in their proper places. Cut paper the size of the bottom of each piece to mark its place.Weave the greenery around. Place kitchen utensils, such as potato mashers, vegetable peelers and wooden spoons tied with Christmas plaid ribbon bows, among the greenery as accents. Place votive candles under tin graters for added light and sparkle.

Center the dessert section of your buffet with a candy tree made from small bare branches secured in foam in a flowerpot vase. You can lightly flock the branches before attaching candies dangling from ribbons. An alternative centerpiece for the dessert section is a decorated gingerbread house.

Add to the kitchen-themed counter by placing recipes next to each dish. You could write these out yourself or type each recipe and print it out on card stock, adding a Christmas clip art decoration before printing or a sticker afterward. Punch two holes about an inch apart at the top of each recipe card and thread some red ribbon through and tie in a bow. Use standing wire photo holders for each recipe card.

Create a swag of gingerbread boys cut from tan poster board or cardstock. String them together with bright green cord. Write the name of each guest on one gingerbread boy. Hang the swag from the kitchen cabinets so the cookies are right above the buffet but not low enough to interfere with guests serving themselves.
