How to Start a Moonwalk Rental Business

Moonwalks, also known as bounce houses, are now common at children's birthday parties, family celebrations and city fairs. They are large, inflatable playscapes that allow children to safely jump, slide and play around inside. Moonwalks come in a wide variety of styles and colors, including those that resemble popular cartoon characters. If you live in a city without many moonwalk rental businesses, opening one may prove to be quite profitable.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop a business plan for your moonwalk rental business. Include the following details, at minimum: analysis of the demand for a moonwalk rental business in your area, three-year profit projections, three-year expense budget, marketing and advertising plans.

    • 2

Obtain the permits required in your city to start a service business, such as an assumed name certificate, Employer Identification Number and state tax identification number. If you plan to actually sell other items, you will also need the proper retail permits for your area.

    • 3

Secure a vehicle for delivering your moonwalks. A pickup truck would work, but if you do not have one, then consider buying or leasing a trailer or flatbed truck. Most customers will expect to have their rentals delivered, set up and picked up. Failing to offer these standard services may result in loss of business to competitors who are better equipped.

    • 4

Lease a storefront or warehouse in which to store your moonwalks. In either case, you will need public-facing space in which to display at least one moonwalk every day, to attract people passing by.

    • 5

Purchase commercial-quality moonwalks and bounce houses from a wholesale distributor. Moonwalks made for personal or home use won't stand up to heavy use by your customers, or constant setups and breakdowns.

    • 6

Write a contract for customers to sign that details delivery options, fees and payment schedules, allotted rental time and what happens if the rental is damaged while in the hands of a customer. Consider getting the advice of an attorney when developing your contract.

    • 7

Build a delivery fee into your moonwalk rental price to cover gas and travel expenses. A reasonable fee for most areas would be between $25 and $35.

    • 8

Place large, visible signs in front of your business that include the price for a moonwalk rental and your phone number. Even if someone passing by doesn't stop immediately, they may take down your number and call later, but only if you have the proper signage.

    • 9

Consider selling additional products and services in addition to renting moonwalks, such as piñatas, goodie bags and helium balloons. Doing so can bring in extra profit.
