How to Stop Corrosion on Boat Trailer Springs

How to Stop Corrosion on Boat Trailer Springs thumbnail
Corrosion can hamper the function of a trailer spring.

Boat trailers are comprised of many parts, including springs that assist in the safe movement of the boat. Corrosion is the wearing away of metals due to a chemical reaction. Metal parts are vulnerable to corrosion, and trailer springs are widely exposed to moisture and chemical interactions. You can prevent corrosion and maintain the integrity of your boat trailer's springs.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean all the main connection points of the spring. Areas where the spring connects to the trailer can become vulnerable to corrosion. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to these areas.

    • 2

Apply anti-corrosive paints made with zinc and/or aluminum metal foils and silicone resin. This creates a barrier between the metal spring and water or chemical interaction that leads to corrosion. These paints are available at hardware stores and automotive stores.

    • 3

Dry off the springs after every use of the trailer with a cotton towel.
