How to Tell the Model Year of a Johnson Outboard

How to Tell the Model Year of a Johnson Outboard thumbnail
Johnson outboard motors are no longer manufactured.

Johnson outboard motors are not currently being manufactured. Johnson Motors has been acquired by Bombadier Recreation Products. The company is still providing parts and support for repairs, but has discontinued manufacture of the motors. Identifying the model year will help ensure the correct parts are used for any needed repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the nameplate on the mounting bracket. Write down the nine-digit serial number found on the nameplate.

    • 2

Locate the seventh and eighth digits. These will be letters and the combination will indicate the model year according to the following table:

      I -- 1

      N -- 2

      T -- 3

      R -- 4

      O -- 6

      U -- 7

      C -- 8

      E -- 9

      S -- 0

An example would be the combination of "ES" for a motor built in 1990.

    • 3

If the code is not nine digits long, the motor was manufactured prior to 1980. Model year can be determined by the combination of HP rating and model type. Review the list of HP and model types on the MarineEngine.com website to determine the year of manufacture (see References).
