If you marry and change your name, you'll need a new Social Security card.

If you get married, divorced or just decide to change your name it is important to change it on all official documents. The Social Security Administration website notes that it is important for you to tell both your employer and the Social Security Administration about the name change to ensure that your income earnings will be properly reported and recorded. To change your name with Social Security there are a few steps to complete.

Instructions

      Fill out, then print and sign an application for a new Social Security card (see Resources). The new card is free of charge.

      Attach proof of your name change, U.S. citizenship and identity to the application. Proof of your name change can be a marriage license, divorce decree or court order, according to the Social Security website. Proof of citizenship can include a birth certificate or passport, and proof of identity can include a driver's license, identification card or passport.

      Mail your application or bring it in person to any Social Security office (see Resources). The Social Security website notes that all supporting documents will be returned to you, and that your new card will have the same Social Security number but will have your new name on it. According to the Social Security website, your new card will be mailed to you after your documents have been verified.
