How to Multiply Binomials Using a SMART Board
High school math class, we have all been there. The equations, the formulas--it seemed like so much to remember. Luckily, in some classrooms SMART boards are available to make it easier and more engaging to teach concepts such as multiplying binomials. Teachers can demonstrate how to multiply binomials by writing on the board and by showing interactive examples to help explain the process. When multiplying binomials, use the FOIL rule, which signifies the order in which terms should be multiplied (first, outer, inner, last).

1
Connect the computer to the SMART board and open the SMART Notebook program to a new notebook. Use the SMART pens to write several examples of equations, including binomials, monomials and polynomials. Call students to come to the SMART board and drag the equations into columns by the type of equation. Define a binomial as an equation with two terms bound by parenthesis.

2
On a new sheet in the notebook, write a sample binomial equation for the class to solve and write the word "FOIL" beneath. FOIL should be defined as the order in which the binomial equation is solved: first, outer, inner, last. Call on a student to come up and solve each part of the equation using a different color pen for each letter. Then have the student combine all like terms in the equation.

Connect to the Internet and visit a page where interactive practice at multiplying binomials is available (see Resources). Allow students to take turns coming to the SMART board and solving various problems given. Ready-made SMART board lessons can also be downloaded and completed for additional practice.
