How to Install Motion Flood Lights
Motion Flood Lights provide added security to your home, as well as allow you to see where you're going at night without the energy expense of continuous lighting. Motion Flood Lights are triggered by motion at night. Motion Flood Lights are usually mounted up high on the side of a home or building. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver if applicable
- Utility Blade
- Drill with assorted bits
- Electrical Tape
- Caulking

Cut a hole in the wall for an interior switch box. Pull the power source cable to the opening of your electrical switch box and pull the cable into the box, secure the power cable into the switch box and use clamps to tie down the power source cable.

Cut a hole into the outside wall where you plan to install your motion flood light. Make sure the is big enough to accommodate a metal cable clamp for the metal box. Move a cable from the switch box to the exterior cutout. Use caulking as needed to fill in.

Insert a cable clamp to the box and tighten to secure the box. Pull the power cable into the box. Tighten and secure the cable clamp. Install the box onto the exterior wall and tighten the mounting screws with a flathead screwdriver. Stop when the flange around the box is sealed to the exterior siding. Use caulking as needed to fill in.

Splice together the white neutral wire from the feeder cable with the white neutral wire from the fixture cable. Connect the black hot wires from the feeder cable and from the fixture cables to the two terminal screws on the switch. Splice together the bare copper ground wires. If there is a grounding screw, pigtail the copper wires down to the screw. Wire a pigtail from the ground wire splice to the grounding screw on the box if it's metal.

Align and install the light fixture for your flood light. Insert the lead wires into the box and screw the lamp socket to the fixture plate. Install the rubber proofing grommet to your wires before splicing.

Splice the red motion sensor wire with the lamp socket wire. Connect the bare copper wire to the grounding clip and screw in the light fixture. Splice the white neutral wire from the switch box with the light fixture's white neutral wire.

Splice the black hot wire from the switch box with the black hot wire from the motion detector.

Arrange all the wires into the fixture box and mount the light fixture. Screw the mounting plate into position with a flathead screwdriver.

Insert your weatherproof gaskets into the flood light by screwing them securely into each light fixture. Screw in the motion flood light bulbs.
