How to Attach an Interlocking Buckle
Attaching an interlocking buckle -- the kind we find on seat belts of cars and airplanes -- might seem simple; but in an emergency, logic can fail. Instead of simply buckling your seat belt, go through the steps so that you know them in order. This might help save your life or the life of someone sitting next to you. These instructions can be used to attach one end of any interlocking buckle to the other end.

1
Sit so that the female and male parts of the buckle are on either side of you. Check to see that there are no twists or torn areas on the belt.
-
2
Hold the belt or harness in your right hand and bring it around you snugly but so that it is comfortable. If it is retractable, let it go back and pull it out more than the amount you need to reach the male end of the buckle.
-
-
3
Continue to hold the belt or harness in your right hand. This part is called the female end of the buckle.
-
4
Reach around and find the male end of the belt or harness. Bring it toward the female end and insert the male end into the female end by pulling on the cover of the female end.
-
5
Pull the cover gently and hold it steady. Place the male end into the opening provided when you lifted the buckle cover latch. Let the cover latch go and listen for a click.
-
6
Test the belt for security and comfort, and test the buckle by pulling on it from both ends. If the two pieces stay together, you are correctly buckled. If one end comes out, redo all of the steps again until the belt stays closed.

Tips & Warnings
If you are a bit overweight or very tall and find that seat belts do not fit comfortably, buy a seat belt extender sold in luggage shops.
Never place the cloth from a seat harness near your throat. If you are short and the harness goes around your throat, place the shoulder part behind your shoulder.
