How to Hide Disk Emulation Software

How to Hide Disk Emulation Software thumbnail
Hiding disk emulation software is relatively simple.

With the rise of online piracy came an increase in publishers' efforts to protect their products. Some of these anti-piracy measures inconvenience both the guilty and the innocent equally. Security programs that run in the background of some games are constantly checking for software that may indicate that an illegal copy is being used. Even though you purchased your game, the security program may not allow you to enjoy it if you're running disk emulation software. Short of writing the publisher to complain, the only way around is to either uninstall the suspect software or to hide it.

Instructions

Download and install emulation-hiding software like Virtual-CD-Hide or Anti-Blaxx (see Resources). If you have installed on your system a virtual drive emulator like Daemon Tools, Alcohol, BlindWrite, or CloneCD, it may be necessary to hide that fact from the anti-piracy security software that your game must run. Many programs such as these are blacklisted by the game's digital rights management -- or DRM -- software, most notably SecuROM, as the publisher fears you may be using the emulator to mount illegal copies of the game disk onto your computer.

Enable the emulation-hiding software when you wish to install or play your game. With Virtual-CD-Hide, this means running the application, which places an icon in the tray section of your task bar. This icon is a disk with the letter V over it. Right-click this icon to open its menu and select "Hide all virtual drives." When you're done, right-click the icon again and select "Unhide all virtual drives."

Run Anti-Blaxx and open its "Settings" window. If you want to run legal copies of your purchased game, Anti-Blaxx allows you to do so through Daemon Tools, Alcohol, or BlindWrite. Locate the program files for each respective program you're using in the "General settings" window. There are five separate tabs that allow you to save settings for up to five different games. Choose "First game," and then select from the drop-down "Protection" menu whichever DRM software your game is running. In the "Game" box, locate the .exe that launches your game. Click "Close."

Right-click on the Anti-Blaxx icon in the tray section of your taskbar to open the menu. Select "Run game" and choose the game you wish to run from the pull-out menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not pirate games, as this is an illegal act. This tutorial was created for users who use virtual drive emulation for legal purposes, such as creating and accessing personal backup copies of their own software, and who wish to play their purchased games without having to uninstall anything from their computer.
