How to Clean Grime & Pet Odor Out of a Fairly New Area Rug
Area rugs are a common addition to homes, especially in rooms with no carpeting. Over time, area rugs can become stained, dirty, dingy and smelly. Adults, children and pets are all responsible for normal wear and tear of your area rug. Keeping your area clean will go a long way in preserving the life of the rug. Things You'll Need
- Cloths
- Club soda
- Water
- Shaving cream
- Mild dish-washing liquid
- Towel
- Paper towels
- Distilled white vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Baking soda
- Vacuum

Removing Stains for an Area Rug

Dip a clean cloth in club soda. Alternatively, use cold water. Wring out the excess liquid. You want the cloth to be damp not soggy.

Blot the stain starting at the edge and working inward. Continue blotting until the stain is gone. If the stain presets, continue to Step 3.

Add a little shaving cream to a clean cloth. Blot the stain with the cloth in the same manner as before. Continue on to Step 4 if the stain is still visible.

Pour 1 cup of water into a container. Add 1 tsp. of a mild dish-washing liquid. Dip a clean cloth in the solution. Blot the stain or gently rub with the cloth until the stain is gone. Pat dry with a towel.
Removing Pet Urine and Odors from Area Rugs

Blot the fresh urine with paper towels.

Create a solution of 2 parts warm water with 1 part distilled white vinegar. Pour the solution into a clean spray bottle. Liberally spray the area rug with the solution.

Allow the rug to air dry. If there is still an odor after the rug has dried continue on to Step 4.

Sprinkle baking soda over the area rug. Leave the baking soda on the rug overnight.

Remove the baking soda with your vacuum. Repeat the process until the odor is gone.
