How to Finish Wood With Lacquer Paint

Lacquer is one of the most commonly used material to finish wood projects. It's easy to apply, dries quickly and provides long-lasting protection. These qualities enable you to completely finish a wood surface in a day, giving your furniture a deep, rich finish that you'll enjoy for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Brush-on lacquer
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sandpaper
  • Wet/dry sandpaper
  • Rag

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wood surface to remove any existing treatments and prepare it for the lacquer. Wipe away any dust with a damp rag.

    • 2

Brush a thin, even coat of lacquer onto the wood surface. Avoid leaving any puddles or drips, which would have to be repaired if allowed to dry.

    • 3

Allow the lacquer to dry, then sand the entire surface to remove imperfections and prepare it for the next layer.

    • 4

Apply two to three additional coats, sanding each layer before moving on to the next.

    • 5

Polish the finished lacquer with fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper soaked with water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you work in an area with good ventilation when using lacquer.
