How to Stop the Use of Plastic Bags
Plastic bags contribute to a variety of environmental problems. The raw ingredients, in particularly petroleum, are not renewable, and extraction causes habitat destruction. Energy is used to make the bags, adding to carbon emissions. Finally, the used bags add to landfills. Many also end up in the oceans, where they can choke and entangle marine animals. Reusable bags are generally inexpensive and last a long time --- two more good reasons for individuals to stop using plastic bags when they go shopping. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Collect together all the disposable bags you already have. You can reuse these at least several times before they wear out. Recycle once they develop tears and holes.
-
2
Buy enough reusable fabric or jute (a plant fiber) bags for your needs. Most people need at least four or five for their major grocery shopping trips, but don't get more than you need. The fabric ones can often last a lifetime.

3
Purchase one or two reusable plastic bags. While these may not be tough enough for the wear and tear of everyday shopping, they can be folded to a very small size, making them ideal to store in your purse or glove compartment for emergencies.
-
4
Put your fabric bags where you will remember them. This might be beside the door, in a rucksack or in the trunk of your car.
